The Thirsty African Bush Elephant | Namibia | Digital Download Photo
It is the late afternoon, I am somewhere in the middle of the Namib Desert. We have just finished setting up camp for the night. Our fire is lit and we are ready to start the barbecue. It is in this moment that a pack of African Bush Elephants approach the camp site. Unlike most campsites in the world, this campsite isn't fenced in, because here in the middle of the Namib desert we humans are just visitors, this is the home of the animals. Well that was what the manager of the little camp told me as I asked. But he also told me don't worry the Elephants come here regularly, they are just looking for water, they have figured out how to drink from the taps. Elephants are very intelligent animals, they can smell water from distance of up to 19KM away. Eased on by the camp manager I went outside to enjoy this spectacular animal. I had seen elephants many times during the previous weeks on this adventure through the Namib Desert, but I hadn't been this close and personal before. This time the elephant was right there about 5-10 meters away from me. The Elephant would occasionally look at me when if it felt I got to close, as if it was saying to me "don't be daft young man" I quickly learned my lesson and backed off.
